Weather in Spain

The weather in Spain varies a lot between the north and the south. Due to Spain's immense geographical diversity there is a variety of climate.

It is commonly said that in the north of Spain to the Cantabrian coast you will find a mild climate with high rainfall. Winters are mild and in summer temperatures rarely exceed 25șC. It is greener, wetter and cooler in winter than the south. In contrast the south of Spain is hotter and drier and in general has a less changeable all year round climate.

In some of the higher parts of the country it is common to see snow from early winter to late Spring, where you will find a harsher climate. Such examples of this will be the Pyrenees,  the Sierra Nevada, the Central and Iberian ranges, and the Cantabrian Mountains.

It is important to know that the weather in Spain is not always good. One of the myths about Spain is that it is always sunny. The weather in Andalucia and the south of Spain is a lot warmer and moderate than the north but it does rain and it can get chilly.

Nevertheless there is no doubt that the weather in Spain and especially in Andalucia is one of the best in Europe. Many have made the south of Spain their home based on it having a better all year round climate.

There are more days of sunshine than most other parts of Europe and winters are milder. In a lot of cases the mere fact that the sun is out and the sky is blue makes many residents feel better about their day.

Weather in Antequera

The weather in Antequera Spain is predominantly a warm Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and winters, although you will see a variation in the temperatures between the two seasons.

The area has an altitude of between 450m and 600m above sea level and as such you will find it hotter during the summer months and chillier during the winter months. As you acclimatize to the weather in Antequera you will notice the difference as well. As you learn to manage the heat during the summer and follow how the local Spanish organize their days the hotter summer months will become easier to cope with. Whilst equally in the cooler winter months where you once wore a T-shirt you will soon be wearing a jumper and coat as you get used to the winter in Spain.

Temperatures can be as high as 45 degrees during the summer months in Antequera and drop down as low as freezing during some winter months. There is always rain at some point of the year and between October and May so you can expect to get wet at some point!

Weather in Antequera Spain average temperatures for Malaga Province

As the average temperatures of the province of Malaga show it is still a better all year round climate. Even in the winter months when the early morning and the nights cool right down this means that the day is going to be clear, blue and sunny with temperatures as high as 25 degrees in the sun.

Weather in Antequera Spain: in Spring

One of the nicest times of the year for weather in Antequera and in Andalucia is in Spring. The temperatures will be warm enough to enjoy sitting out in the sun but not too hot to be uncomfortable. Spring in Antequera is a very popular time to see people out and about exploring the zone, walking, enjoying drinks on the terraces, visiting the lakes and even visiting the coast to enjoy the weather on the beaches. It is a great time to visit other cities and investigate places you have been thinking about visiting throughout the year.

The agricultural fields surrounding the town of Antequera start to come to life with the many planted crops such as wheat, potatoes, broad beans, onions and garlic. The almond trees are in blossom, colourful wild flowers are popping up all over and there is colour all around. As Easter or Semana Santa falls in the spring, it is a great time to enjoy the many celebrations which will be going on in the actual town of Antequera and around the Antequera region. It is also one of the most popular times for the Spanish to travel.

The one small drawback of Spring is that the weather in Antequera is not as dependable as in summer. It is likely to have overcast and rainy days during Spring when temperatures are likely to be around 9-15 degrees. The rain is obviously welcomed and does not last for long and as many say better a rainy day in Spain than in other parts of northern Europe!

Weather in Antequera Spain: in Summer

Summer is long and hot! From June onwards the weather in Antequera Spain will be hot and sunny until mid September and often beyond. Temperatures in the height of the day can reach 40 degrees and so it is important to follow the Spanish lead and rest during the hotter periods. Schools finish their term in mid June and working hours alter slightly so that the day starts earlier and finishes earlier to avoid working in the highest temperatures.

You will see many Spanish starting their working days at 7am to beat the heat and then start to slow down at around 1.30 to 2pm. At this part of the day they will eat and rest as it is likely that they will stay up later and enjoy the cooler part of the evening. One of the attractions of Antequera, and Spain as a whole, in the warmer months is that things slow down because of the weather. No one can work at full pace in such heat so subsequently you have a slower pace of life which calms you down and there is less stress. You have to alter how and when you go out and when you do your business as many banks and professional bodies will close by 1.30 and not reopen until the following day.

Many Spanish will spend more and more time on the beach during the summer period and so many in Antequera will head for the Costa. The beaches of the Costa del Sol are only 45 minutes away so many make a day of it with their families. Others cool off in the nearby lakes known as 'El Chorro' where you can swim, picnic, lunch and hire boats to go onto the lakes.

In August most Spanish have their annual holidays and you will find many businesses in Antequera closed for some period of time. Notoriously it is the time when people leave the cities as it is so hot, and Antequera is no different.

Weather in Spain in summer on beaches of the Costa

Spain's coasts are the most popular places in the summer. Touristy areas such as the Costa del Sol will be full of northern Europeans and Spanish. Lesser known tourist destinations such as the Costa de La Luz which is only 2 hours from Antequera will be visited by many more Spanish. It is always good to check ahead when planning to visit campsites or hotels in the region so that you can get booked in if you decide to stay over night.

Weather in Antequera Spain: in Autumn

As the Spanish go back to work and Europe's tourists start to return to their own countries Spain and Antequera will return to the kinds of temperatures that don't leave you feeling like you're lying in a frying pan!

As the temperature in Antequera starts to slowly come down it returns to a similar weather to that of Spring. It is unlikely to really cool down until beginning of October but as we say before you will notice the difference in temperature as you have acclimatized and after summer it will definitely feel cooler!

Gradually the enjoyment of the holiday period passes and people and businesses get back to normal. Children return to school in mid to late September and most households get back into their routines. The temperature and general weather in Antequera remains very pleasant and comfortable and, along with Spring, is probably the best time of year. It is still warm enough to enjoy days and evenings out and unwind from a busy summer yet not too hot to be uncomfortable.

It is likely to get rainy days from October on so the boring and monotonous blue skies do eventually start to show a different shade!

Weather in Antequera Spain: in Winter

Most of northern Spain will be cold and the best place to be will be here in the south in Andalucia. As Antequera is at an altitude of 575m above sea level there will definitely be some chilly mornings and nights. Having said this if it is cold in the early and late parts of the day it is likely that the time between 11am and 5pm will be crystal clear, blue skies and a temperature of 15 degrees and above in the sun. Shady spots will be cold and if there is a wind it can feel even chillier. Night time temperatures will get down to 4 or 5 degrees in the town itself and through the night there is likely to be a light frost.

Throughout the winter months there is always the chance of rain and during cloudy, overcast rainy days the temperatures will be a more constant 9/10 degrees. There may be a light dusting of snow to be seen on the mountains above Antequera with peaks of above a 1000m during winter but it is very unlikely to see any snow on the ground, Occasional freak days have seen snow on the ground over the past decade and when this happens the Spanish often go a little crazy as they very rarely see snow in Antequera. It doesn't last long though as the sun generally comes out soon after!
