Shopping is an important part of our lives whether it be just for pleasure or necessity. Antequera has a good variety of shops and services scattered around the town which will no doubt cater to all your needs. Whether you are already living in the area or you are contemplating a move here it is always useful to know where the main shopping areas of Antequera are and what you can expect to find there.

So, where do people shop in Antequera?

There are three main areas; the barrios, the centre and the outskirts of town.

Those that live in the town itself will live in what is known as a 'barrio' or neighbourhood, of the town. In most cases, where the barrio is an established neighborhood and not a new development, you will find people can shop very locally. There will be  fruit and vegetable shop, a butchers, a bakery, and a well stocked supermarket within easy walking distance. As well as the basics you will find many other interesting shops catering for a variety of things where the local families have set up their own businesses. Such things could include, paint shops, florists, electrical stores and barber shop and so on. All relevant and useful shops for everyday life.

Then there is the centre of town which has a wide cross section and good selection of everything you could need including, clothes, mobile phone stores, pet shops, all the professional services, banks, estate agents, and so on. there are of course many that live in the centre of town and that is their 'barrio' so the same rule will apply to finding everything they need nearby. You may find things are slightly more expensive here as renting a local (commercial property) will cost them a bit more.

Then there is the outskirts of town. This is where you will find the larger supermarkets and hypermarkets that offer a very large selection of food, drink and other home products. Of course the hypermarkets offer a more 'one stop shop' experience and have nearly everything under one roof.

You will also find the 'Poligono Industrial' (industrial estate) on the outskirts of town. This area is full of larger warehouse stores, car dealerships, the hospital, furniture stores and much more.

Also on the outskirts you will find the National Police Station, Law Courts, a couple of garden centres and the train station.

Although there are a few supermarket chains and national names in the town it is still nice to see small independent shop owners operating. In fact the majority of stores are independently owned and offer a wide range of products. This makes walking around Antequera very interesting because as you walk in and out of the different areas there is always an interesting shop window to look into.

Shopping areas are spread around the centre of the town and each area is filled with a good selection of shops.

There are many pedestrian streets in Antequera which makes shopping a pleasant experience.

Most of the shops and banks follow the traditional opening times which means that between 2pm and 5pm everything will be closed. Obviously bars and cafes will remain open all day long. Sunday is still a very traditional day as well in Antequera, as it is in Spain, so it is unlikely to see the hustle and bustle associated with many northern European towns on a Sunday.

Calle Infante Don Fernando, Antequera

This is what is probably commonly regarded as the main 'high street' of Antequera where you will find a selection of clothes shops, electrical stores, banks, estate agents, tobacconists, restaurants and tapas bars along with opticians, travel agents and professional services. It is not the most interesting of main streets but there is no doubt that it is lined with some fantastic architecture. Not least at its' end you will find Plaza San Sebastian, which is at the bottom of the rather steep climb into what is commonly known as the old town and where you will find the Moorish castle overlooking the surrounding area.
