Antequera is a town of two styles. It has over the last few years become a very cosmopolitan town with it's many street bars and cafes as well as a very modern shopping centre. It also has a major bus terminal. Click here for bus timetables >>>> There is also a train station in Antequera which means you can visit any city in Spain by train. What makes this Antequera special however is that it still has a very traditional feel with the cobbled streets that form part of the old town. Very Andalucían. Full of history The coast and the city of Malaga is only 45kms down the motorway but as many of the residents here will tell you the local lakes are far more enjoyable than the beaches. The lake at the village of Iznajar has its own beach as well. Clean water, no crowds and no hassle. However if it is the beach you want there are some very good ones only an hour away. |

The surrounding area near Antequera can only be described as spectacular. The lakes are only a 20 minute drive away and a very pleasant place to spend a relaxing day. Hiring a car is also easy to make the most of the area if on holiday in Spain. The villages of Alameda, Mollina and Fuenta de Peidra all have well established communities living there. Making new friends is very easy in this area as there are things going on all the time. There is a very good golf course near the town along with a 4* hotel called the Antequera Golf. |

Antequera is known as the crossroads of Andalucía with direct motorway links to Malaga, Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba. It is hard to believe that about 1 hours drive away is the skiing resort at the Sierra Nevada near Granada. Not many people know that ski in Spain. The ex-pats also get to enjoy the traditional Spanish fiestas that are held locally or they can go to the more famous ones. Antequera also has the big advantage that it is close to two airports Malaga and Granada making the search for low cost flights easier. Residents often pop back to the UK to visit family and friends or attend special functions |
The old castle at the top of the town provides great views of mountains on one side and olive-covered hills on the other.
However Antequera also has two claims to fame historically. The first consists of three fine prehistoric dolmens barely outside the town itself. The second is the Torcal de Antequera a short drive from the town itself a mountain top covered with huge and wonderfully shaped limestone, formed millions of years ago when the whole area was underwater. There are 3 excellent routes down for those who like walking but we suggest getting a lift or taxi up first. They are marked by different coloured paint on the rocks so getting lost is not a problem.
Motorways run directly from Antequera in all directions and it is very easy to get to Malaga, Sevilla, Cordoba, Cadiz, Granada and Almeria all within a couple of hours. Many residents quite often go away and visit one of these cities for a few days. There are plenty of great value hotels to be had out of season.
