Video of Antequera

We hope you enjoy the flavour of Antequera in the video below as well as the Spanish song that goes with it. Real Spain as any ex-pat living in the area will tell you.

Antequera lies in the heart of Andalucía less than fifty kilometres north of Malaga. It is considered to be the cultural centre of the region with many fine churches, palaces and museums. Overlooking a fertile plain, Antequera is a market town where, in the past, agriculture was its main source of revenue. Although still a very important producer of oil from olives and sunflowers, tourism has become an important element of the town’s economy.

Antequera has an extended holiday season with long hot summers and mild winters.

Although the most popular time to visit is during the summer months it is also a good place to go to escape from the damp British winter.

Antequera is also famous for the Indian face mountain.

La peña de los enamorados is a mountain which looks like a face looking up at the heavens. If you are wondering why it has a name like it does it is because of a legend about two lovers. Basically a Christian boy falls in love with a Muslim girl and of course this wasn't the done thing in the old days, so they try to escape.

They end up on the face-like mountain of Antequera where they hide out for a while until their pursuers catch up with them. Instead of giving themselves up they make a suicide pact and throw themselves off the mountain hugging each other in Romeo and Juliet style. Today of course it is quite different and many cultures are welcomed in the town.
